LOI Digest: Hoops look to build on sweet Cork success

Shamrock Rovers will hope to build on their impressive win against Cork City
Shamrock Rovers will hope to build on their impressive win against Cork City

St Patrick's Athletic v Shamrock Rovers, Richmond Park, 7.45pm

These Dublin rivals come into this one in very different moods.

Rovers got a huge lift off Monday night's 3-0 defeat of champions Cork City, but St Pat's are still smarting from a 5-0 drubbing in Dundalk.

They are unbeaten at home in the league in their past five games however so Liam Buckley will hope a return to Inchicore can help get them back on track.

Team news

St Pat's: The Saints are boosted by the return of Ryan Brennan from a one-match suspension while goalkeeper Tyson Farago, midfielder Owen Garvan and forward Christy Fagan will face late fitness tests.

Shamrock Rovers: Dan Carr is back from suspension but Sean Boyd (hamstring) is still a couple of weeks away.

Gaffer talk

Liam Buckley (St Pat's): "It's an important game for us as we need to go on a little run if we're to start looking up the table. We need the points as we had been on a little unbeaten run, so we just need to get back winning and picking up consecutive results to start moving up."

Stephen Bradley (Shamrock Rovers):  "It was a good win [against Cork]. We played well and took our chances. Last season we didn't do too well in Richmond Park but it's gone now. It's a different game and that doesn't really come into it. We can't take our foot off, we need to keep pushing forward."

Waterford v Dundalk, the RSC, 7.45pm

The Lilywhites hit the top of the table with their hammering of St Pat's on Monday night.

Stephen Kenny's men healed the pain of their loss to Cork with a classy showing at Oriel Park. They'll be very wary of a trip to the RSC against a side just three points behind them in third.

Newly promoted Waterford have been terrific and have already taken the Leesiders' scalp in a fiery collision. They took the three points at Bohs at the start of the week and will be fired up for the visit of the league leaders.

Team news

Waterford: Gavan Holohan and David Webster are back from suspension, however John Kavanagh will again miss out through injury while Stanley Aborah (hamstring) is also ruled out. Kenny Browne is doubtful as he continues to receive treatment on a back injury suffered in the draw against Sligo Rovers. Derek Daly is also an injury doubt after picking up a knock in Monday’s win at Bohs.

Dundalk: Karolis Chvedukas remains out with an ankle problem while Sean Gannon is also out with fractured ribs and will miss the next month at least. Striker Sam Byrne is likely to miss out also after picking up a hamstring injury on Monday.

Gaffer/player talk

Bastien Hery (Waterford): "It’s a game that I’m really looking forward too," he told the club website. "We showed very good character on Monday to win at Bohs because that is a tough place to go and get a result. We were under pressure a lot in the second half but we defended superbly well and kept a clean sheet which will give us confidence going into this game against Dundalk."

Stephen Kenny (Dundalk): "It was a good display from us on Monday night against St Patrick’s Athletic and we are very pleased with that but we have to go again. Waterford have had great home form and they are having a great season. They are a good side."

Bray Wanderers v Derry City, Carlisle Grounds, 7.45pm

Derry City are four points off the top with a game in hand and have used their brilliant home form as a catapult to a very strong  start to this campaign.

They routed Limerick 3-0 at the Markets Field while Bray fell to a 2-1 loss in Sligo, and Kenny Shiels will expect his side to keep the fires burning.

Bray are bottom of the table with just one league win to their name all season.

Team news

Bray Wanderers: Gary McCabe returns after missing the loss to Sligo Rovers, but John Sullivan, Aaron Greene, Darragh Noone and Jake Kelly who are all long-term absentees while Paul O Conor, Aaron Dillon and Conor Kenna will have late fitness tests.

Derry City: To come

Gaffer talk

Graham Kelly: "The two defeats last weekend were tough to take as we feel we deserved something from both games. While we are happy that we are creating chances in games we also know we need to be more clinical in front of goal and start putting them away."

Kenny Shiels (Derry City): To come
