Since play-off ties became a regular part of the qualification process back in the 1990s, no UEFA nation has participated in more of them, between World Cups and European championships, than the Republic of Ireland.
Tonight marks our eighth playoff appearance in a playoff since the final game of Jack Charlton's reign in Anfield in late 1995. (Indeed, our tally rises to nine if one includes the somewhat aberrant playoff clash with Spain in Paris in the 1966 preliminaries.)
