United States manager Bruce Arena has resigned following the country's failure to reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Arena said in a statement on the US federation's official website: "Everyone involved in the programme gave everything they had for the last 11 months and, in the end, we came up short. No excuses. We didn't get the job done, and I accept responsibility.

"This certainly is a major setback for the senior men's national team, and questions rightly should be asked about how we can improve. No doubt this process already has started and will continue so that US soccer can progress."

The US's emphatic 4-0 win over Panama in Orlando last Friday appeared to have rescued their qualifying campaign as the Hexagonal entered its final game week.

However, a disastrous trio of results on Tuesday night means the States won't be part of the World Cup summer for the first time since Mexico '86.

Both Panama and Honduras achieved surprise wins over the already qualified Mexico and Costa Rica, while the US suffered a disastrous 2-1 defeat against bottom placed Trinidad & Tobago in front of a tiny crowd in Couva.

Arena, who managed the United States to one of their best ever World Cup performances in 2002 and later coached Robbie Keane to MLS titles at LA Galaxy, took over for his second stint with the national team in November 2016 with the team already in a hole in their 2018 qualification campaign.

Arena's predecessor Jurgen Klinsmann was sacked after managing the side to losses against Mexico and Costa Rica in the campaign's opening two matches.

Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama proceed to the World Cup, the latter for the first time ever. Honduras, meanwhile, face into a playoff match against Australia.

The US, incredibly, are out.
