Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of Jupp Heynckes as coach until the end of the season.
The 72-year-old, who succeeds Carlo Ancelotti, has had three previous spells in charge of the Bundesliga giants, most recently when he led them to the league, cup and Champions League treble in 2013.
Despite leading Munich to the Champions League title in his final game in charge, Heynckes was replaced in the summer of 2013 by Pep Guardiola.
At the time, he received the news with great equanimity, saying he had "a worthy ending" and intended to retire. But he has been coaxed out of retirement with Bayern Munich second in the Bundesliga table, five points behind early leaders Borussia Dortmund.
Heynckes is one of only five managers to have won the European Cup with two different teams, having previously led Real Madrid to a Champions League title in 1998.
Ironically, the man he succeeds is also grouped among that illustrious quintet.
Bayern said in a statement that Heynckes would take over from Monday on a contract until June 30, 2018.
