Daryl Murphy confident he can click with the new boys

Daryl Murphy feels ready to adapt to any striking partner he's paired with should he get the nod against Moldova, with the chances of a new face coming into the reckoning increasing daily.

Shane Long sat out Republic of Ireland training on Tuesday morning with a dead leg, with Jon Walters definitely ruled out and Kevin Doyle recently announcing his retirement.

It leaves Martin O'Neill's attacking options stretched, and though Long should be okay to face the Moldovans in the first of two do-or-die World Cup qualifiers on Friday night, new boys Scott Hogan, Aiden O'Brien and Sean Maguire could well be called upon at some point.

Nottingham Forest man Murphy, capped 26 times for his country, can certainly expect to play a big role. He's confident whoever comes in will hit the ground running.

"It helps if you know someone's game but we train together every day," he said.

"As a professional footballer you should be watching the players you're training with and know what they're good at and what they're not, and adapting in games.

"Whoever starts will give everything for the jersey. We don't know what's going to happen or what the manager is going to pick. We just have to wait and see."

In a career that's brought him to Sunderland, Celtic and Ipswich Town, the 34-year-old is enjoying an Indian summer.

Murphy has scored six of Forest's 13 goals in the Championship this term and is the joint-highest scorer in the division.

"I think it's just experience and being more mature when you're put in different situations when you;e playing and things aren't going your way," he added of his good form.

"When you're younger you tend to think about it too much, overthink it, and it affects your game. As I've got older I've realised there's no point in dwelling on it, just get on with the basics, the things you know you're good at, and work on that.

"If you're getting picked for your country to start the game, no matter who it's against, it's a confidence boost straight away."
