Eamon Dunphy has little sympathy for Crystal Palace and their dismal start to the season.
The Eagles have lost their first seven games without scoring and have had the worst start ever by a team in the top four divisions of professional football in England.
"Whatever went on in the summer with the signing of (Frank) de Boer as their coach, however that was managed they deserve what they get really," Eamon Dunphy told RTÉ 2fm’s Game On.
"Roy Hodgson is not the answer; if he is I don’t know what the question is. I don’t think Hodgson is an inspirational figure. They will end up going for Sam Allardyce, watch that space."
Liverpool had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Newcastle as their frustrating season continued. The result means it is just one win in seven in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp's side who are currently seven points behind Premier League pacesetters Manchester City and Manchester United.
They went ahead against Newcastle through an impressive goal from Philippe Coutinho. But the home side were gifted an equaliser after some poor defending ended with the ball rebounding off Joselu’s shin and trickling into the net.
Reflecting on the game Dunphy wasn't impressed with Liverpool's defending.
"The defensive problems won’t go away, they are a bad pairing (Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip) but then (Alberto) Moreno was playing left back which is mad.
"(James) Milner on the bench, (Andy) Robertson who they signed in the summer not playing. They have wonderful players up front. They were far better than Newcastle; they just leak goals, it’s a horror show.
"That goal was a carbon copy of the goal (Sergio) Aguero scored against them. Kevin de Bruyne played a ball right through the same space.
"Really I’d say the two centre halves were Sunday League level. It’s basic stuff and you would have to be highly critical of the two players and very very critical of the coach .
"You need someone to marshal the defence. John Terry couldn’t do a lot of things but he organised the Chelsea defence for ten or twelve years, (Nemanja) Vidic was the same at old Trafford when he was there.
"There are good defenders all over the place and one of their roles is to sniff danger and be in the right basic position.
"Lovren is (Brendan) Rodgers' guy and Matip was bought by (Jurgen) Klopp. They are like statues, standing square on, which you should never be."
