Cork battle their way to a third consecutive Cup final

Cork City are through to the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup final after a narrow win over Limerick at Turner's Cross.

Garry Buckley's goal in the 14th minute was enough for City who remain on course for a double with the league title set to be wrapped up this month.

Limerick rallied after the goal and will feel they could have at least earned a replay as Chiedozie Ogbene saw his shot saved by Mark McNulty and Stephen Dooley was forced to clear a Shane Duggan cross off the line.

But John Caulfield's men hung on and are now just one game away from retaining the trophy.

City started much the brighter with Kieran Sadlier looking threatening.

It was Karl Sheppard that set up a great chance for the opening goal as he crossed to find Buckley in the area, but he scuffed the shot and it bounced over Brendan Clarke's crossbar.

Ryan Delaney headed over from a corner in the 10th minute as the Rebels continued their bright opening and Limerick looked nervy in defence.

The goal arrived as Sadlier cleverly lopped the ball to the back post and Buckley was there to slot the ball through the legs of Clarke.

He came close to a second goal in the 21st minute as again a Griffin corner caused danger in the Limerick box.

However, Limerick then came into the game.

Ogbene began to see more of the ball and he set up Tosi with his back to goal but Mark McNulty was able to cope with the shot.

A deflected Ogbene shot has McNulty at full stretch and as the half came to a close it was John Caulfield that had more work to do.

The champions elect tried to get tighter to Limerick as their tense 1-1 draw with Dundalk last Monday looked to impact on the side.

Tosi's fine header looped just over the crossbar and then Lee Lynch played a ball at pace across goal but there was no player on the end of it for the visitors.

City introduced Jimmy Keohane and Stephen Beattie to give legs to midfield and while Limerick had plenty of possession, chances were few and far between.

A Duggan set piece caused the last major scare as the ball rebounded on the line off Dooley, but Caulfield's men were able to hang on for a third November date in the Avila Stadium in succession.
