Everton will assess Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy ahead of their St Stephen's Day trip to Leicester City after the 26-year-old hobbled out of the Merseyside derby with a hamstring injury.
McCarthy had been central to an energetic and committed first-half Toffees display that eventually ran out of steam as Sadio Mane stole victory for Liverpool in the 95th minute.
He made way for Gareth Barry at the break after pulling up late in the opening period.
Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was also forced off in the second half following a collision with Leighton Baines, and boss Ronald Koeman said afterwards that the pair are being monitored.
“James played well in the first 45 minutes but he was not sure about his hamstring and we couldn’t take that risk,” he told the club's website.
“With the goalkeeper, it is always a difficult situation.
“We need to recover now. We’ve had a big, intensive game and we will prepare and see which players are available [for Leicester] and, in particular, the fitness of both of those players.”
McCarthy's international team-mate Seamus Coleman was terrific for the beaten hosts, and he tried to rally the troops after what was a gut-wrenching loss.
“We’ve got a busy Christmas period coming up and the Premier League waits for nobody," the Donegal man said.
"We’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again.
“I thought we had the best of it in the first half and, to be fair, they had the best of it in the second half.
“It’s just very disappointing to concede like we did - the ball hitting the post and rolling across like it did was hard to watch. We’re disappointed.”
