Ronald Koeman admits he's facing a selection dilemma for his first Merseyside derby, with James McCarthy's "outstanding" display against Arsenal giving him serious food for thought.
McCarthy set the tone for an impressive Goodison slaying of the Gunners on Tuesday night.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder was a tireless thorn in Arsene Wenger's side and helped turn the tide as Seamus Coleman and Ashley Williams cancelled out Alexis Sanchez's opener to give the hosts a moral-boosting three points.
McCarthy was at the centre of a club v country tug of war last month when his club boss urged him to pull out of international duty to focus on getting fully fit, but Koeman believes the 26-year-old is now getting back to his best.
I think we saw from James [against Arsenal], his performance was outstanding
“It was a long time [since] he was at that level of fitness," Koeman said ahead of Monday night's clash with Liverpool.
"He was struggling. He was fit and then after one or two weeks, again a hamstring injury.
"I think we saw from James [against Arsenal], his performance was outstanding. He did very well."
McCarthy could keep stalwart Gareth Barry - who, along with Leighton Baines and Mason Holgate, signed a new contract on Friday - out of the side for the grudge match.
Koeman, however, stayed coy on his selection.
“I understand I need to make decisions but that’s in midfield, up front, with the defenders – Phil [Jagielka] is not available on Monday.
"But I’m happy I have different options and I will choose the best one.
"The derby is all about the fans, we understand that but we need to be calm and prepare for the game in the way we like.
"It's about preparing the team. You have an emotional part that you need to control. That's the most important."
Everton have only one win in their past 19 league games against Liverpool going back to 2007.
"It's not good. One out of 19," Koeman said. "We need to accept how difficult it is, win the game and make the fans happy."
Koeman also confirmed winger Yannick Bolasie's season was over after the forward underwent knee surgery.
"Bolasie had surgery on his meniscus but now needs another on his anterior cruciate ligament," the Dutchman added. "He will be out for a long time."
