Shamrock Rovers have appointed Stephen McPhail as the club's sporting director.

The cultured midfielder retired from his role as player/coach with the Hoops last month following a long and distinguished career.

McPhail was part of the Leeds team which reached the upper echelons of the Premier League before going on to play for Barnsely, Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday.

He joined the Tallaght outfit in 2014 and spent two seasons in green and white.

In a statement, the club said he will be "be heavily involved throughout every aspect in improving Shamrock Rovers."

In the short-term this will involve working with the board to appoint a head coach - a decision that is to be made in the next ten days according to the club.

McPhail is also expected to be involved in player recruitment and as a link between the academy and senior teams.
