Galway United 0-0 Longford Town

Galway United and Longford Town played out an uneventful 0-0 draw in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division at Eamonn Deacy Park.

The main topic of discussion at the Corribside venue was the news that Galway are set to announce their new manager early next week.

Tommy Dunne was sacked on 30 September and an appointment is imminent in the West after this draw with Longford.

Though Galway bossed vast chunks of the first half, they squandered a couple of chances and Longford, already relegated, held out to secure a point.

Galway went close in the seventh minute when a lengthy Conor Winn clearance spilled kindly for Gary Shanahan, but his firm right-footed shot was saved by Paul Skinner.

In the 11th minute Armin Aganovic, Conor Melody, and Shanahan were all involved in a clever build-up, but a Kevin Devaney effort was deflected out for a corner.

Devaney’s delivery from that set-piece was headed wide by Stephen Folan as Galway pushed for an opener.

The Tribesmen survived a significant scare in the 22nd minute when a Kevin O’Connor cross was controlled by David O’Sullivan, but the attacker was thwarted by a Winn save.

Devaney was denied again in the 36th minute by a fine reflex stop from Skinner as Galway continued to probe.

When the interval rolled around the teams were still deadlocked, with Longford content to have frustrated the locals.

A dreadful third quarter, high on perspiration but low on inspiration followed, with little goalmouth action as both teams struggled.

Longford spurned a gilt-edged opportunity when failing to punish sloppy play from Galway in the 69th minute as O’Sullivan dragged an attempt wide.
