Liverpool and Manchester United will renew their rivalry on Monday night

Liverpool and Manchester United have issued a joint statement warning fans they will be thrown out of the ground for any "offensive or discriminatory behaviour" ahead of Monday night's Anfield showdown.

The two English giants meet in a mouthwatering Premier League clash under the lights on Merseyside.

In what is one of the most bitter rivalries in European football, tensions are sure to run high - on and off the pitch - with both clubs appealing for calm.

A joint statement read: “Both clubs, their supporters and football fans around the world are looking forward to this historic and passionate match between two of the sport’s biggest and oldest rivals

"There is great rivalry between our fans and we ask all supporters to be respectful and help eradicate all forms of offensive and discriminatory behaviour from the game.

“If any supporters are found to be engaged in any form of offensive or discriminatory behaviour by stewards or via CCTV then they will be immediately removed from the stadium, risk arrest, prosecution and be reported in accordance with the club’s ground regulations.

"This is an unrivalled fixture in the Premier League calendar and we thank all fans for their continued support in this important area of the game.”

Last May, the two rivals were fined €40,000 each - half of which was suspended - for illicit chanting by their fans during March's two-legged Europa League clash.

Liverpool were fined a further €17,000 for the offences of setting off of fireworks, throwing of objects, crowd disturbances and a late kick-off and ordered to contact United within 30 days for the settlement of the damages caused by their supporters at Old Trafford.

Ex-Republic of Ireland striker John Aldridge expects a red-hot atmosphere at Anfield.

"The fact that Jose Mourinho is Manchester United manager adds extra spice to a fierce rivalry," Aldridge wrote in the Liverpool Echo earlier in the week.

"Liverpool fans didn't mind Louis van Gaal. They didn't really have a problem with David Moyes but they can't stand Mourinho, especially after the way he conducted himself in the games against us with Chelsea.

"He's guaranteed a hostile reception."
