Joe Hart turned in a virtuoso performance to save England from defeat in Slovenia, as the decision to drop captain Wayne Rooney failed to unlock a brave new era.
A clunky England could - and should - have been beaten but Hart produced a match-defining display with brave blocks from Roman Bezjak and Josip Ilicic and a stunning goal-line stop to deny Jasmin Kurtic.
Kurtic also hit the post in the first half, while Rooney's late arrival from the bench was not enough to turn an entertaining 0-0 into an undeserved win for interim boss Gareth Southgate.
