Republic of Ireland forward Jonathan Walters has shrugged off a poor performance against Georgia - saying three points was the only ambition at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday night.
Ireland struggled to a 1-0 home win over the Georgians, captain Seamus Coleman poking the ball home following a forceful run.
A dire first half performance improved slightly after the break, though Walters says the only thing that counted was the win.
“It’s a win so we’ll take that all day - three points was the main target so bring on Moldova on Sunday,” said the Stoke City striker.
“Great start to the group.”
Speaking on RTÉ Sport, Walters admitted that Ireland were struggled before the break, but insisted that the Boys in Green were better int he second half.
“We did [struggle] to be perfectly honest,” he said. “We got out in the second half and pressed them and limited their chances. We had a rollicking about it ourselves and with the manager at half-time and we were a lot better
“That’s what qualifiers are all about - regroup and go at it again on Sunday. It will be a tough game over there in Moldova.”
Walters also had praise for skipper Coleman, who finished off his mazy run with a few one-twos off Georgian defenders and a much-needed goal.
“It was fitting for the captain to get that goal and it was a great run,” he said. “He makes those runs all day and he deserved that goal.”
Ireland have four points from two games following their draw with Serbia away and they continue their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign on the road at the weekend.
