Real Madrid remained three points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga as both sides dropped points on Wednesday night.
Real had missed the chance to claim a record 17th straight LaLiga win as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Villarreal but Barca were unable to close the gap to their bitter rivals as they were also held 1-1 by Atletico Madrid at the Nou Camp, with Lionel Messi limping off with an injury.
Real Madrid were hesitant in the first half against the Yellow Submarine and the first period ended with Sergio Ramos conceding a penalty by blocking Manu Trigueros' shot with his hand. Bruno Soriano stepped up to plant a Panenka-style kick past Kiko Casilla.
Ramos atoned with a towering header from a James Rodriguez corner three minutes into the second half but despite their domination Real were unable to find the crucial winner.
Barcelona were at one stage on course to cut Real's lead to one point when Ivan Rakitic headed them in front from an inswinging Andres Iniesta cross in the 41st minute.
But the second half will have raised Real coach Zinedine Zidane's spirits as first Barcelona's key man Messi had to go off with what appeared to be a groin injury and moments later Angel Correa grabbed a deserved equaliser for Atletico.
Las Palmas' impressive start to the campaign hit the skids in San Sebastian as they were torn apart 4-1 by Real Sociedad.
The Canary Islanders made a dreadful start when Willian Jose received the ball from Mikel Oyarzabal and steered a shot past Javi Varas in the first minute.
The hosts added a second in the 21st minute as Willian Jose's header was blocked by the hand of Kevin-Prince Boateng, who was dismissed, and Mexican forward Carlos Vela converted the spot-kick.
David Zurutuza headed home Xabi Prieto's 35th-minute cross and Willian Jose added a fourth in the 53rd minute from the spot after David Simon fouled Oyarzabal. Tana's goal three minutes later was the merest consolation for Quique Setien's side.
La Real's Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao were 2-1 winners away to Granada.
Raul Garcia scored a spectacular left-footed effort which crashed in off the post in the 15th minute but Mehdi Carcela equalised for the home side a minute before the break.
However, Athletic went back in front with 13 minutes to go as Aymeric Laporte showed quick reactions to tuck in a rebound following a Benat Etxebarria corner.
An 87th-minute penalty from Iago Aspas earned Celta Vigo a first win in LaLiga this season as they beat Sporting Gijon 2-1 at Balaidos.
Hugo Mallo gave Celta a 65th-minute lead with a right-footed shot from Pione Sisto's tee-up but the visitors levelled through a Duje Cop penalty (80). The points were set to be shared until Fernando Amorebieta brought down Nemanja Radoja in the box and Aspas stepped up to score as Sporting suffered a second straight defeat.
