Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Quinn led ten-man Reading to a gutsy 2-1 win at Brighton that put the Royals in the hat for the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

The visitors battled for more than half the tie with 10 men after defender Tyler Blackett received a straight red card for a late challenge on debutant Sebastien Pocognoli.

Chris Hughton's Brighton dominated for long spells in the second half but broke through only once when substitute Tomer Hemed scored from close five minutes from time.

Reading scored first on 32 minutes when Brighton failed to deal with a corner by Swift and the ball ran to Quinn who smashed home from six yards.

The Royals were reduced to 10 men three minutes before the break when referee Lee Probert showed a straight red card to Blackett for sliding into Pocognoli.

Brighton began the second half in lively fashion and central defender Connor Goldson headed wide before John Swift pounced to double Reading`s lead in the 54th minute.

Swift, given time and space on the edge of the area, fired a well-taken second to the right of Maenpaa after being set up by Quinn.

The Seagulls reduced the deficit when Steve Sidwell and Murray combined and substitute Hemed forced the ball home from close range on 85 minutes, but it wasn't enough.

Arsenal will be hoping their 4-0 victory against Nottingham Forest is a good omen.

The Gunners' only two League Cup triumphs in 1987 and 1993 each featured wins over the Reds and Granit Xhaka's strike and a Lucas Perez double set the ball rolling for history to perhaps repeat itself.

Xhaka produced a carbon copy of his stunning long-range goal against Hull to give Arsenal, showing 11 changes from Saturday, the lead midway through the first half and Perez's penalty after an hour extended the advantage.

Perez then put the tie beyond doubt with another goal 11 minutes later, ensuring there would be no Forest win to mark the 12th anniversary of Brian Clough's death, before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain completed the scoring in stoppage time.

Steven Naismith was applauded by all sides of Goodison Park after scoring the goal that sent Norwich on their way to an upset at Everton.

The popular forward, who left Everton in January, put the Canaries in front just before half-time against the run of play and Josh Murphy clinched a 2-0 victory with a superb second.

Naismith was given a very warm reception before the game and returned the compliment by refusing to celebrate his goal.

The result was a measure of revenge for Alex Neil's team, who were beaten on penalties at Goodison Park in the fourth round last season, and meant a first defeat as Everton boss for Ronald Koeman.

Simon Makienok scored a hat-trick as Preston sprung a shock by beating a much-changed Bournemouth in extra-time.

Eddie Howe made 11 changes to his Cherries side and they were humbled by their Championship opponents as Makienok struck his first goals for Preston to seal a 3-2 win.

The Denmark international opened the scoring early on before Lewis Grabban's penalty and Dan Gosling's close-range finish looked to be enough to put the hosts through.

But Makienok headed a late equaliser to force extra time and then prodded home a winner to send the 293 visiting fans into raptures.

Newcastle avenged their Championship defeat to Wolves at the weekend with a 2-0 win over the Black Country club.

Daryl Murphy made his debut as the Magpies - beaten 2-0 at home by Walter Zenga's side on Saturday - bounced back in style.

They had the St James' Park faithful on their feet when Matt Ritchie slotted them in front on 29 minutes, and it was quickly 2-0 when Yoan Gouffran volleyed in.

Substitute Chris Wood struck late on to send Leeds through to the fourth round with a 1-0 win over Championship rivals Blackburn.

Wood broke the deadlock in Leeds' victory over Rovers seven days ago and he came off the bench to settle the cup clash with his sixth goal of the season.

The New Zealand international's timely strike gave United a third win in a row and ensured Blackburn failed to build on their first Championship victory of the season.

Rovers made nine changes to Leeds' seven and it showed during a first half that struggled to get going in front of a crowd of just 8,488, the lowest at Elland Road since the Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash with Darlington seven years ago.
