Wenger is ‘detached from reality’ - Dunphy

RTÉ soccer analyst Eamon Dunphy believes that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is ‘detached from reality’ and expects the pressure on him from the stands to grow.

Arsenal have just one point from their opening two Premier League games after losing 4-3 to Liverpool on the opening day and drawing 0-0 with Leicester at the weekend.

Wenger is already hearing grumbles and groans of discontent from the Arsenal supporters, who are disappointed with what they perceive to be lack of progress on the pitch.

The Gunners have signed just two players in the current transfer window, bringing in midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach and Bolton defender Rob Holding.

Supporters accuse Wenger of being unwillingly to spend, but while Dunphy acknowledged that fans are right to be unhappy, he does not think the Arsenal manager is in danger of losing his job.

Speaking on 2FM’s Game On, Dunphy said: "I think he will stay because the guy who has power at Arsenal has total faith in him, but I know he’s going to get terrible stick from the fans.

"People are exasperated - Arsenal fans and even people in the game who admire so much about Wenger. He seems to be detached from reality."

Dunphy was critical of Wenger’s lack of action in the transfer market and also questioned the suitability of Xhaka to the Premier League.

"He bought a midfielder player for €35million but this fella’ Xhaka is useless. I watched him for Switzerland in Dublin, I watched him at the weekend and I watched him for Switzerland in the European Championships.

"I don’t know what’s going on inside Arsene Wenger’s head, why he hasn’t bought defenders and why he hasn’t bought top class strikers.

“He’s got the money so it is very, very frustrating. Things aren’t right there and it’s impossible to get your mind around Wenger’s thinking.

"Patrick Vieira was quoted as saying that he’s buying the wrong kind of players. He’s not buying players with steel and with personality and character to fight. They don’t fight as a team.

"They will be contending for a top four spot but I think it will be much tougher for them this year."
