Manchester United defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has joined Wolves on a season-long loan, but says he has been assured by Jose Mourinho he has a future at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old, who came through the youth ranks with the Red Devils, made his United debut last November and played in 14 first-team games under previous manager Louis van Gaal.

The defender broke into the first-team following a long-term injury to left-back Luke Shaw last September, but with the former Southampton man the first-choice for the position, he will move to the Championship club until the end of the season.

Earlier this summer he signed a new contract at United, but has been allowed leave to get more experience.

He was keen to stress that Mourinho has not closed the door on his United career, but his short-term aim is to get Wolves back to “where they belong”, the top flight.

“My aim is to come here, play as many games as I can, gain experience and go back [Old Trafford] and challenge for a place in the team,” he said.

“Mourinho has told me I have a future there.”

Last year the England underage international was named United’s Under-21 Player of the Year.
