Aiden McGeady’s days at Everton appear to be over after the Republic of Ireland international was overlooked for a squad number for the forthcoming season.

New manager Ronald Koeman has left McGeady - along with Oumar Niasse, Conor McAleny and Leandro Rodriguez and Luke Garbutt - out of the initial allocation of shirt numbers.

McGeady played small parts in the Toffees' first two domestic pre-season games but did not travel to Germany for two matches in Dresden and his number seven shirt has been taken by Gerard Deulofeu.

McGeady made 13 appearances on loan for Sheffield Wednesday last season but was released by the club ahead of their Championship play-off semi-final against Brighton and the final against Hull after a series of poor performances.

Although McGeady has 85 international caps to his name he was reduced to a substitute role during Euro 2016, and it now seems Koeman has decided to cut short his Everton contract, which was for four-and-a-half-years when he signed from Spartak Moscow in January 2014.
