Owen Heary will succeed Kevin Doherty as manager of Shelbourne, the struggling First Division club confirmed today.
The 39-year-old, who won five league title and one FAI Cup during his time at the club between 1998 and 2006, has signed a deal until the end of the current campaign.
“The appointment is initially until the end of the season, at which stage discussions will take place regarding it's continuance into 2017,” a club statement confirmed.
Shels currently sit third from bottom, with just five wins from their 14 games.
The club accepted with “deep regret” at the weekend Doherty’s resignation and Heary will now take charge of his third team since hanging up his boots in 2013.
An initial caretaker role with Bohemians was his first foray into management, and has been out of work since leaving Sligo Rovers in June of last year.
Heary made 274 appearances for Shelbourne during their dominance of the league, and added a further two more with Bohemians in 2008 and 2009.
