Athlone Town have been fined €1,000 and stripped of home advantage for their August clash with Waterford United after they failed to fulfil last week's First Division fixture between the two sides.

The midlanders were due to face Waterford in the RSC last Friday night but informed the league they didn't have enough players. It is believed a majority of players refused to travel due to unpaid wages.

League Director Fran Gavin called the failure to play "totally unacceptable", with the FAI ordering an independent review into the circumstances surrounding the no-show.

The FAI disciplinary committee has now issued a number of sanctions to Athlone, including a €1,000 fine with an additional €4,000 suspended, which will only be payable if they fail to fulfil another competitive fixture this month.

Waterford have been awarded a 3-0 result for the match, with Athlone forfeiting the fixture.

The next fixture between the two sides on Friday, August 5 was set to be played in Athlone, but will now be played at the RSC and Waterford will retain all gate receipts from the game.
