THE SSE Airtricity League has announced the naming of a new cup in honour of Derry City legend Mark Farren.
Farren passed away aged 33 in February after a battle with cancer. The talented striker - the Candystripes all-time leading scorer - had travelled to a specialist clinic in Tijuana, northern Mexico last summer for treatment on a grade four brain tumour
However he tragically lost his battle with the disease, and the league has now recognised his contribution to the game by naming the U17 Mark Farren Memorial Cup in his honour.
The Donegal-born striker had an illustrious career in the game with Derry, Finn Harps, Glenavon and Monaghan United. He was also an apprentice at Huddersfield Town and Tranmere Rovers.
"It's fitting to way to commemorate Mark's memory," said FAI Director of Competitions Fran Gavin.
"All young players should aspire to have a career and conduct themselves in the same manner he did. He was a great player as well as being a great person."
