It took extra time and penalties to separate two La Liga sides in tonight's Europa League quarter-final clash as Sevilla beat Basque side Athletic Bilbao.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg Aritz Aduriz opened the scoring for Bilbao in the 57th minute to level the tie at 2-2, before Kevin Gameiro put Sevilla back in front two minutes later.

Raul Garcia restored parity in the 80th minute with Bilbao's second away goal ensuring that extra-time would have to be played with the scoreline at 3-3 after 90 minutes.

The sides could not be separated over the additional 30 minutes and a penalty shoot-out would be needed to see who progressed to the semi-finals.

And it was Kevin Gamer's spot-kick that ultimately decided the contest as Sevilla won 5-4 on penalties.

Villarreal enjoyed a 4-2 win over Sparta Prague to take the tie on a 6-3 aggregate scoreline thanks to two goals from Cedric Bakambu, Samuel Castillejo and a David Lafita own goal. Borek Dockal and Ladislav Krejci scored the consolation goals for the Czech side.

Elsewhere, Shakhtar Donetsk proved too strong for Portuguese outfit Braga winning 4-0 (Agg 6-1) thanks to goals from Dario Srna, Viktor Kovalenko and two own goals from Ricardo Ferreira.
