Former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Gavin Gunning has left Dundee United three days after his bizarre exit against Inverness.

Gunning picked up the ball in mid-play before walking off the pitch complaining of a knee injury an hour into United's damaging 2-0 home defeat on Saturday.

The defender was immediately ordered back on by manager Mixu Paatelainen and underwent treatment before being substituted.

As he walked towards the tunnel, he responded to jeers from the home fans by applauding sarcastically.

A club statement read: "Gavin Gunning has left Dundee United by mutual consent. This is a private matter and the club will not make any further comment."

Paatelainen brought Gunning back to Tannadice in November and Saturday was the 20th appearance of his second spell at the club.

But the Dubliner was unable to help United get off the bottom of the Ladbrokes Premiership and they slipped eight points adrift of Kilmarnock on Saturday.

The 25-year-old had left Tannadice in the summer of 2014 but only made two appearances during a spell in England, both in the League Cup.

He suffered cruciate ligament damage on his Birmingham debut and then left Oldham in August last year after a short-term contract expired.
