Republic of Ireland midfielder Alan Judge has been ruled out of the European Championships after suffering a  double leg break during Brentford's Championship win over Ipswich.

Judge received eight minutes of treatment before being taken from the field on a motorised stretcher just two minutes into the game.

With the game only settling at Portman Road, Luke Hyam clattered into the Dubliner, leaving him writhing in agony on the turf. His leg was in a brace when he eventually left the field.

The 27-year-old made his senior international debut in the 1-0 win over Switzerland last month and had been hoping of forcing his way into Martin O'Neill's plans for France.

Ipswich striker Luke Varney defended his team-mate after the game, telling Ipswich Player HD: "At the time, I didn’t think anything of it, and I’ve had a few of those off him in training so I know he's a committed player.

“Hyamsy would have meant no malice behind it, he’s not that kind of player and we were hoping Judge was here because the lads were going to go to see him, but we wish him all the best.

“It was unfortunate for Judgey, obviously he’s a great player, but I wish him well and a fast recovery because I’ve been there myself, it’s a tough thing to take at this stage of the season."
