Substitute Vicente Iborra struck seven minutes from time to keep Sevilla on course for a third straight UEFA Europa League title after a 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao.
The visitors fell behind to an Aritz Aduriz opener but a quick equaliser from Timothee Kolodziejczak then Iborra's late winner gave Unai Emery's men the advantage heading into their quarter-final second leg next week.
The home side grabbed the lead three minutes into the second half when Aduriz rose to direct a fine header past Soria from a deep Iker Muniain cross.
But Bilbao's lead lasted less than 10 minutes as Emery's men rallied well and Kolodziejczak pounced to stab home the equaliser in a crowded box after an uncharacteristic mistake by Muniain.
Despite another miscued effort from De Marcos for the home side it was the visitors who were clearly in the ascendency and no doubt happy to sit on their away goal in anticipation of the home second leg to come.
But it got even better for the visitors three minutes from time thanks to the alertness of Iborra, who had only been on the field for nine minutes since replacing Ever Banega.
The in-form front man kept his nerve in the box to knock home from a neat pass by Kevin Gameiro and ensure his side are strong favourites to move closer towards a second successful defence of their crown.
The in-form Cedric Bakambu scored twice as Villarreal took a 2-1 first-leg lead in their Europa League quarter-final against Sparta Prague.
The DR Congo forward's farcical third-minute opener was cancelled out in first-half stoppage time by Jakub Brabec to leave the scores level at the break.
But he struck again just after the hour - his seventh goal in six games - to give his side a slender advantage to take to the Czech capital next week.
The opener came from the first serious attack of the game - if, indeed, it could even be classified as such.
Martin Frydek's eccentric back-pass from the left wing position was controlled by goalkeeper David Bicik but he then cleared the ball against the onrushing Bakambu and watched the ball rebound past him into the net.
Soldado had an effort blocked and Victor Ruiz headed over, but it was Sparta who struck right on half-time, Borek Dockal's corner headed in by defender Brabec.
Bakambu restored Villarreal's lead in the 63rd minute, stroking a calm right-footed finish into the corner of the net from inside the 'D' after Suarez laid the ball off to him.
Shakhtar Donetsk soaked up pressure from Braga and then scored in either half to take a 2-1 away win in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.
Braga had the best of the first period, but Shakhtar went ahead against the run of play just before half-time through Yaroslav Rakitskiy, who was an injury doubt before the match.
The second period at the Estadio Municipal de Braga proved more equal in terms of chances, and the visitors again took one of theirs, this time through Facundo Ferreyra.
Although substitute Wilson Eduardo pulled a goal back late on, Braga will have their work cut out to turn the tie around in next Thursday's second leg in Ukraine.
