Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long is facing a fitness battle to be ready for Southampton’s trip to Premier League leaders Leicester City on Sunday.
The Tipperary native was substituted at half-time during Ireland’s 2-2 draw with Slovakia on Tuesday with a knee problem and the club say he will be assessed after training tomorrow.
Long had won two penalties in the opening 45 minutes of the international friendly and converted one before succumbing to injury.
He is the only injury concern for Saints manager Ronald Koeman whose side currently sit in seventh position in the Barclay’s Premier League, 19 behind Claudio Ranieri's table toppers.
It has been a worrying week for Ireland manager Martin O'Neill with a number of his Irish strikers currently sidelined with injury.
Robbie Keane has undergone surgery to address his right knee injury in Los Angeles and is expected to be out of action for between four and six weeks, while Stoke City’s Jon Walters had a minor knee operation of his own on Wednesday.
Walters didn't play in Ireland's friendlies with Switzerland and Slovakia but is confident of returning to full fitness in time for France, despite the possibility he will miss the rest of Stoke's Premier League campaign.
