The RTÉ soccer panel discussed the possible make-up of Martin O’Neill’s 23-man squad for the European Championships following the 1-0 victory over Switzerland on Friday night.
Richie Sadlier and Kenny Cunningham ran the rule over the likely candidates to make the final cut and despite a man-of-the-match performance against the Swiss, former Ireland captain Cunningham believes that Shane Duffy could miss out in favour of Stoke City’s Marc Wilson.
"A Marc Wilson back physically fit maybe just gets the edge over Shane Duffy" - Kenny Cunningham
"The thing I like about Marc Wilson is his versatility," he said."Shane Duffy has really enhanced his chances. He looks a real defender.
"A Marc Wilson back physically fit maybe just gets the edge over Shane Duffy. It’s very close."
Looking at the attacking options at O’Neill’s disposal, Sadlier expects O’Neill to plump for the quartet of Robbie Keane, Shane Long, Daryl Murphy and Jon Walters.
“Kevin Doyle was a big, big hope in terms of staking a claim. I don’t think anyone is going to do anything to shift those four.”
