Shelbourne cruised to a 5-0 victory over Cabinteely at Tolka Park in the EA Sports Cup, just days after the sides drew 1-1 in their First Division encounter.

An eighth-minute goal from Gavin Boyne gave Shels the lead after he chased down a through-ball before slotting home but there was no sign of the goal bonanza that was to come until the hour mark.

Cabinteely went into the break 1-0 down having had chances of their own but when Sodiq Oguntola scored Shels’ second with a close-range header, the fight seemed to go out of the visitors.

Oguntola bagged a second goal in the 66th minute, while James English and Mark Sandford also found the net as the Shelbourne ran out comfortable winners.

At Eamonn Deacy Park Galway came out on top in the battle of the Connacht sides as they beat Mayo League 3-1.

Galway United and Padraic Cunningham in particular were eager to put this game to bed as soon as possible.

Cunningham opened the scoring just two minutes in, added a second 11 minutes later and completed his hat-trick on 16 minutes.

The game was over as a contest after that and while Mayo League did manage to grab a consolation goal through a well-taken JP O'Gorman effort, it was too little, too late.

The evening's other game went to penalties as Bluebell United got the better of Drogheda United after a dour scoreless draw.

Chances and thrills were at a premium at a chilly United Park but misses from the spot for Graham Zambra and Mark O'Brien proved to be decisive as Bluebell held their nerve to progress.
