Former Manchester United player Paul Scholes has identified three players that could transform the struggling Red Devils.

Scholes has been critical of United on occasions this season and was particularly unimpressed following the 2-0 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool in the Europa League Round-32 first-leg last week.

"I’d like us to bring Paul Pogba back" - Paul Scholes

Louis van Gaal is under increasing pressure as the club currently lie in sixth position in the Premier League and were seven minutes from exiting the FA Cup at the hands of West Ham before an Anthony Martial equaliser forced a replay on Sunday.

Speaking to United We Stand fanzine, the former England midfielder name-checked three players, including an ex-Manchester United midfielder, who could lift the fortunes of the club.

"I’d like Luka Modric. How old is he now? Might be a bit too old, but he’s a great player,” he said.

"I like Raphael Varane. I said realistic and I’m picking Real Madrid players?

"We probably need a centre forward but there’s not too many of them about so I’m going to say I’d like us to bring Paul Pogba back."

Scholes described United as a “shambles” at Anfield last week and says the standards have slipped alarmingly at the club.

"When we played we were setting standards for these players, the manager set standards for David Moyes and Louis van Gaal and every single one of them has fallen short,” he said.

"The last thing I want to see is United being happy with finishing fourth and winning the FA Cup. Arsenal do that."
