Chris Forrester called into Republic of Ireland squad

Chris Forrester, Matt Doherty and Jonny Hayes have been named in the provisional 40-man Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia on 25 and 29 March.

Peterborough United man Forrester, twice capped at U21 level, will get the chance to turn Martin O'Neill's head as his dream of earning a spot in the Euro 2016 squad gets a boost.

He was superb in Posh's FA Cup defeat to West Brom last month and has routinely caught the eye in League One this campaign.

The former St Patrick's Athletic man has been labelled "priceless" by his chairman Darragh MacAnthony, as his stock continues to rise.

The 23-year-old has missed the last four games with a leg injury but returned to training yesterday.

Wolves right-back Doherty has represented his country at the U19 and U21 grades but has yet to make the senior step-up, while winger Hayes has been rewarded for his eye-catching displays in the Scottish Premiership for Aberdeen this year.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City's Stephen Gleeson is back in the fold after a nine-year exile. The 27-year-old won two caps on the 2007 tour to the USA, but hasn't featured at senior level for his country since.

Brentford's Alan Judge has also been rewarded for his run of good form in the Championship with a call-up.

O'Neill has refused to rule out new faces forcing their way into the picture for France, and is prepared to give them a golden chance to force his hand.

"Both myself and my staff have been incredibly busy since qualification last November scouting and monitoring as many players as possible," O'Neill said.

"I know that I will have a very tough decision to name a final squad for Euro 2016 and that is why I want to give players a chance to impress.

"For these two games, I would like to encourage Ireland supporters to come out in numbers to support the team as passionately as they did during our qualifying campaign.

"When we come together it creates a fantastic atmosphere at the Aviva Stadium and the players really feed off that."
