Antoine Griezmann scored against his former club as Atletico Madrid brushed aside Real Sociedad 3-0 to provisionally close the gap on Primera Division leaders Barcelona to five points.
An own goal from Diego Reyes and a Saul Niguez strike put Atletico in charge and Griezmann - a £24m signing from Sociedad in 2014 - wrapped up the scoring in the 61st minute when he won and converted a penalty.
That was Griezmann's 21st goal of the season in all competitions and helped Atletico trim Barca's lead at the summit, although the pacesetters, who are on a 34-match unbeaten run, can restore their advantage when they play Rayo Vallecano on Thursday.
In Tuesday night's other Primera Division game Las Palmas boosted their hopes of avoiding the drop with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over freefalling Getafe, who have now lost seven successive games.
An early strike from Willian Jose and a penalty from top-scorer Jonathan Viera put Las Palmas in charge at half-time, and a double from midfielder Tana after the break set up the hosts' biggest victory of the season.
Las Palmas' win, their second in succession, sees them move three points clear of the relegation zone, one point above Getafe, who had debutant Alvaro Pereira sent off midway through the second half.
