Arsenal handed Barcelona assignment in Champions League

Barcelona await the Gunners again
Barcelona await the Gunners again

The draw for the Round of 16 of this year's Champions League has thrown up some fascinating pairings, with Arsenal drawn against Barcelona and Chelsea facing PSG in a repeat of a clash from the same stage of last year's competition.

Manchester City, the third English side in through to the knockout stages, will play Dynamo Kiev in a tie for which the game in Ukraine must be played behind closed doors.

The Gunners, who reached the last 16 with a memorable victory at Olympiacos in their final group game, knew they could have faced Barca or 10-times winners Real Madrid.

Their task will be a daunting one and Barca, having beaten Manchester City at this stage for the last two seasons, will be clear favourites.

Chelsea face PSG in the knockout stages for the third season in succession and will hope to gain some revenge after losing to them in March.

City will be pleased to have avoided the dangerous PSG as they bid to reach the quarter-finals for the first time but their fans may be frustrated about the Kiev situation.

The Ukrainian club were ordered to play two games behind closed doors last month as punishment for offences that included racial abuse of players by supporters during their group game against Chelsea.

City fans already boo the Champions League anthem in protest against UEFA, chiefly because their fans were not allowed to travel to a game at CSKA Moscow last season. That situation was slightly different, however, as some fans had already made visa, travel and accommodation arrangements before the ruling was made.

"We are certain to see a sporting spectacular," said Barca director Albert Soler of his side's clash with the Gunners.

"Arsenal and Barcelona have a similar style of play. The fans will enjoy themselves, we're two sides with a similar understanding of the game. They will be two great matches. We must have maximum respect for Arsenal."

"Barca are used to playing under pressure in every sense. But we are the reigning champions and that gives you an edge."

Arsenal club secretary David Miles said: "It is not easy and the one to avoid at this stage, but it is up to us and we will give them a game.

"Messi, Neymar, Suarez... you could go on, but we have our own world class players and I am sure they will be fantastic games in London and in Barcelona."

There is also a familiar feel about the Chelsea v PSG tie.

"There is not much we don't know about Paris," said Chelsea general secretary David Barnard.

"You only know if it's a good draw after the tie. We are ambitious, we have two-and-a-half months to prepare," PSG sports director Olivier Letang said.

Former Barcelona director of football Txiki Begiristain admits he was thankful his current employers Manchester City were guaranteed to miss out on a reunion with the Catalans as both progressed as group winners.

Instead City got Dynamo Kiev, where the away leg will be played behind closed doors due to UEFA racism sanctions.

"I was so happy this morning knowing that we wouldn't have Barcelona again!" Begiristain told Eurosport. "There is a great danger when you go to a draw - Dynamo Kiev they have been in a very tough group phase with Porto and Chelsea.

"They have shown they are a good team and for us the challenge is to improve in this competition and move forward."
