Gearóid Morrissey has returned to Cork City after agreeing a two-year contract with his hometown club.
Morrissey spent four years with his hometown club before making the move to Cambridge United a year ago.
The midfielder, who was on the books of Blackburn Rovers as a teenager, told the club’s official website: “I’m really happy to be back. I just want to crack on now and get back to playing, which is what I love to do. The fact that the squad is getting stronger was one of the key factors in me signing. We are looking to win some silverware next season.
“I kept up to date with the team last season, but I didn’t see many games. We all want to go one better than last season.”
Securing the services of the 24-year-old comes hot on the heels of completing a deal for striker Sean Maguire, and City boss John Caulfield said of his latest acquisition: “It’s fantastic news. I’m sure the supporters will be thrilled. We want to be a stronger team next year and Gearóid coming back to us is great news.
"Looking back at last season, I think we missed Gearóid, we struggled in the middle of the park on occasions this year. The beauty with Gearóid is that he knows us, he knows me and he knows the club. He has a passion for the club and he knows what needs to be done.
“I am pleased that the squad is coming together. Since the Cup final, it has been solid going, hoping that I can build a stronger team for next season, which I believe we will have.
“I think people can see the type of player at the club is changing and the age profile of the team is changing. We will be a more dynamic team next year. I think this signing will be a lift and will show our intent for next season.”
