New Sligo Rovers manager Dave Robertson has made his first signing at the Showgrounds, by signing PFAI goalkeeper of the year Michael Schlingermann.

Schlingermann who played for Sligo once in 2009, returns to the Bit O'Red, joining them from Drogheda United.

The goalkeeper He was an ever-present with Drogheda last season playing every minute of the league season and has a total 134 career appearances.

Schlingermann joins John Russell, Regan Donelon and Gary Boylan in Dave Robertson’s squad for 2016 so far.

The Mayo man said: "I am delighted to be signing with Rovers. Last season was disappointing for me so I was looking to get sorted as soon as possible. As soon as Dave rang me I got excited about coming here. It’s coming back home and to a big club in Sligo Rovers so it’s great.

Schlingermann started his career with Sligo six years ago making one first team appearance against Bohemians.

"I was here when I was 17 and I made my debut under Paul Cook. It was then that I built a hunger to play football because I had been playing GAA as well up until then. My time here was a big part of the decision to stick with football and it’s worked out really well for me.

"After leaving I went to Athlone, initially it was just to be for a year and come back but it went so well and I became number one so I stayed. From there I worked my way up the league and I had two and a half great seasons with Drogheda. But it’s time to come home."
