Star striker Danny Furlong was speechless at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night after firing Wexford Youths into the SSE Airtricity Premier League.

Furlong hit the net a record-breaking 28 times this season as the Youths recovered from a shaky start to win promotion to the top flight.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport after Friday's 3-0 win against Athlone Town which secured promotion, Furlong said the victory was based on hard work.

"I'm speechless here to be honest. All week we were a bit nervous. [This was] Something we weren't used to coming into it, but in fairness we worked our socks off and that's just been the season we've done."

Furlong played down his goal-scoring exploits, saying: "I'm lucky enough to get all the goals too, but that was the last thing on my mind. Tonight was just about winning the league, it was just a bonus to get that record."

He also emphasised the journey the club has taken since formation in 2007.

"The last couple of minutes there was tears about to come out. I've seen this club where there's only been five lads training, I've seen managers not showing up for training.

"Shane [Keegan] has came in and he's turned it around. The talent is in Wexford for football, but Shane really has got it on the map. Hats off to him."

The striker is now looking forward to having another crack at Premier Division football.

"That time I was in the Premier [with Cork City], I don't think I got a fair enough crack. It was a tough time for me down there both on and off the pitch, but at the same time I could have came back and packed it in."

Instead of packing it in, Furlong finds himself looking forward to returning to the big time, but has one final target in the First Division - "two games to go, I'm going to try crack that 30 mark."

Manager Keegan praised all those involved in the historic promotion run.

"Tonight is the culmination of four years of incredible hard work by people on the pitch, off the pitch, coaching staff, players. It really has been an unbelievable effort from them.

"There's been as many downs as there has been ups, it's been tough at times but this season we've been absolutely superb.

"We lost the first two games of the season, when you think back to that there was some serious questions being asked. It was a very, very tough time. As you can see its a different story now.

"Football at every level is flying down in Wexford. Underage, junior, women, ourselves. Its going from strength to strength and long may it continue."
