Bohemians 1-1 Longford Town

Noel Haverty was Longford Town’s saviour at both ends at Dalymount Park as he headed an equaliser before then clearing off the line to earn the midlanders a precious point against 10-man Bohemians.

The home side started purposefully as skipper Roberto Lopes saw his shot blocked inside five minutes, after working a one-two with striker Ismahil Akinade.

Longford soon settled, however, as Kevin O’Connor did well to skip past two defenders before drilling a shot wide from outside the area after 15 minutes.

But terrific defending rescued Longford two minutes later; Pat Sullivan nicking the ball off the feet of Keith Buckley as he raced in behind on to a misplaced pass from O’Connor.

A foul by Dave Mulcahy on O’Connor saw Longford respond with Dean Kelly curling a free kick narrowly wide.

Another set-piece brought the visitors a further opening after 28 minutes. A handball by Bohemians’ left-back Lorcan Fitzgerald resulted in Rhys Gorman picking out Stephen Rice in the area, but the midfielder's lob was just over Dean Delany’s bar to land on the goal netting.

Despite plenty of goalmouth action, the game’s first shot on target didn’t arrive until the 32nd minute.

Akinade did well to power through after a one-two with Paddy Kavanagh to then turn and shoot straight at Town keeper Paul Hunt.

A minute later, Sullivan again displayed some excellent defending when heading off the line after Akinade had bounced a header goalward from a Fitzgerald free kick.

Bohemians were then reduced to ten men after 37 minutes when midfielder Buckley was sent off for a second yellow card offence following a foul on Sullivan.

Three minutes later, however, the home side were ahead from a sublime solo strike from winger Kavanagh, who cut in from the right to rifle a left-foot shot to the net from distance.

Poor defending from a corner saw Bohemians concede a soft equaliser right on 45 minutes when Longford right-back Haverty looped a header to the net from Ayman Ben Mohamed’s delivery.

Haverty then showed his defensive quality to make a terrific clearance off the line from an Akinade header five minutes into the second half.

Then Kelly just failed to cap his 30th birthday with a goal as he was inches from putting Longford ahead five minutes later when shooting off a post.
