Wexford Youths WAFC continued their excellent start to the Continental Tyres Women’s National League Shield with a maiden south-east derby victory over Kilkenny United WFC.
Kylie Murphy gave Wexford the lead from the penalty spot after 30 minutes against Kilkenny, who were playing their first competitive game in Buckley Park.
Claire O’Riordan struck twice before half-time to give Wexford a three-goal lead with Murphy playing a key role for O’Riordan's first on 35 minutes.
Ciara Rossiter then capitalised on Emma Hansberry’s work just after the interval to make it 4-0, seeing Wexford top Group A with six points.
Meanwhile, UCD Waves picked up their first victory of the new season, even though they played just over half of the game with 10 players.
Last season’s WNL top scorer Aine O’Gorman gave UCD the lead after ten minutes over Cork City WFC in Jackson Park.
Karen Duggan tapped in Waves' second on 30 minutes after Cork goalkeeper Trish Fennelly couldn’t hold Julie-Ann Russell’s cross.
Susan Hackett received her marching orders for UCD two minutes into the second half, although O’Gorman finished off Russell’s cross moments later.
Russell made it 4-0 for Eileen Gleeson's side after 56 minutes with a sweet strike which gave Fennelly no chance.
On Saturday evening, Galway WFC took a big step toward next phase of the Shield with an impressive seven-goal victory away to local rivals Castlebar Celtic.
It was the hosts who opened the scoring via Catherine Hyndman with Lucy Hannon twice equalising, the second equaliser cancelled out Amber Lynch’s strike.
Lynsey McKey gave Galway the lead from the penalty spot just before half-time, before striking a second-half hat-trick along with Sorcha Ní Bhraonáin’s late finish to make it seven.
The victory see’s Galway top Group B with four points from their opening two fixtures and a goal difference of plus five.
The fixture between Shelbourne Ladies FC and Peamount United was postponed due to international commitments and will be re-arranged in due course.
The final series of the shield group fixtures is scheduled for Sunday 4 October.
