Derry City 3-0 Drogheda United

Derry City booked their place in the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup quarter-finals following an emphatic 3-0 win over Drogheda United.

Patrick McEleney got the show on the road when he headed home on 18 minutes before man-of-the-match Cillian Morrison and Barry McNamee netted in quick succession just after the hour mark.

Mark Timlin broke the United offside trap to latch onto McEleney’s clever through ball in the early stages, but the striker was denied by keeper Micheal Schlingermann.

Derry deservedly took the lead on 18 minutes following Morrison’s delicious right-wing cross as McEleney made no mistake heading past a fully-stretched Schlingermann.

United were inches away from conceding a second on 35 minutes but Timlin’s drive, after he had easily got away from Michael Daly, smacked Schlingermann’s left-hand post.

Derry nearly grabbed a second goal in fortuitous circumstances on 50 minutes but Schlingermann was alert to tip over Morrison’s deflected strike.

Schlingermann had to be in top form eight minutes later. This time he parried away Morrison’s stinging 20-yard drive.

Derry and Morrison deservedly scored on 65 minutes when he was quickest to react after Schlingermann had turned McEleney’s free-kick on to the post and the striker turned home the loose ball.

Minutes later, Derry netted a third when McNamee registered hid third goal of the season, drilling the ball home from 25 yards.

In the end, Derry continued to pile forward looking for more goals and Dean Jarvis in particular was denied a memorable goal when Alan Byrne headed his clever effort off the line.
