Dundalk’s Richie Towell has apologised to Jamie McGrath after the St Patrick’s Athletic man suffered a suspected broken nose following a wayward kick on Monday night.
Towell caught McGrath in the face with his foot during Dundalk’s 4-1 victory in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, but has since been in contact with the Pat’s man to apologise.
Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny told the Irish Sun: “Richie rang Jamie McGrath to apologise. It was a careless kick by Richie really but there is no way he meant to hurt the lad.
“Jamie is a fine young player and Richie is probably the most kicked player in the league so he knows what it is like. He has to deal with a lot of treatment most weeks.
“It was careless from Richie, we were 4-1 up at the time, we’d played really well. I hope an incident like that doesn’t overshadow the whole game.”
Saints boss Liam Buckley insisted it was a red card: “It’s a red card all day long. Either it’s nothing or a red card. But look, that didn’t change the game.”
