New Sligo Rovers manager Micky Adams feels he can offer a fresh start for the Bit o’ Red after the former Premier League manager was handed the reins at The Showgrounds last night.

The ex-Leicester City boss said the job was one he was pleased to take.

He told RTÉ: “I’m grateful for the opportunity. There a lot of good managers in England waiting for an opportunity and the challenge at Sligo Rovers is one I wanted to take on. Sligo have a great reputation - they have won trophies in the recent past including the league three years ago.

“They have had a lot of English managers that have come across and done well in the past. Things have not gone great for them this year. We have to pick up points to move up the table.”

Adams revealed he consulted with former Sligo management team John Coleman and Jimmy Bell prior to accepting the job.

"The English market is still open, but firstly we will look at what we have at the club"

“The appointment came about quickly, I spoke to John and Jimmy at Accrington Stanley, and they said it was a great club.

“It’s a country I have always kept on eye on. I like to think I can offer something to the club and the players. Football is football, 11 v 11, and for every player there, it is a new start as well.

“I haven’t worked with any of them, it’s a fresh start and a new feeling on the training ground and that is no disrespect to the managers that were there before. Everyone will get that new start."

Adams has not ruled out the possibility of adding to the Sligo squad, with free agents in England still available to sign for Irish clubs until their window closes at the end of the month.

It is something he is open to, but first he will look at what options are currently in the Sligo squad.

“The English market is still open, but firstly we will look at what we have at the club.

“I travelled back to England last night and I’m flying back to Ireland this morning to start training tomorrow and go from there.”

Adams has appointed Alan Rogers as his assistant manager, having previously worked with him and Prenton Park.

Adams said: “Alan was a player for me as well, he had a good career with the likes of Nottingham Forest and Leicester, I think he was bought for up to £3m at one stage. He is a good young coach that will offer us a lot.”
