Josep Maria Bartomeu has been elected as the president of Barcelona after beating Joan Laporta by over 10,000 votes.

Bartomeu, 52, stepped up to replace Sandro Rosell as president in January 2014 and oversaw Barca's Primera Division, Champions League and Copa del Rey treble in the 2014-15 season.

Figures published on the Catalan club's official website revealed Bartomeu had polled 54.63 per cent of the vote while former president Laporta, who left the role in 2010, polled 33.03 per cent. Agusti Benedito (7.16 per cent) was third and Toni Freixa took 3.7 per cent of the vote.

After it was confirmed Bartomeu had clinched 25,823 of the 47,270 votes cast by 43.12 per cent of Barcelona's membership, the former vice-president addressed the media.

He said: "Today was a day that will have encouraged many of our members. But most of all, it has been a great party.

"Thank you for creating this perfect day because we have shown that we love this club and that this is the best club in the world.

"We are committed to continuing to improve and to keeping on winning. We are all in this together and together we will be stronger. We will work rigorously to try and stay at the top of the game."

Bartomeu, who in his manifesto promised to protect and reinforce the potent attacking trident formed by Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, will serve as president until 2021.

His close relationship with successful first-year head coach Luis Enrique has endeared him to fans, but his pledge to keep the current €50m sponsorship deal with Qatar Airways in place had generated vocal opposition to his campaign.

The runner-up, Laporta, was first elected as Barcelona president in 2003 and won re-election three years later.

During his mandate the club won the Champions League twice and he was responsible for the agreement with Unicef in 2006 that saw Barca adopt the organisation's logo on their first-team shirt.
