Middlesbrough are hoping to complete the permanent signing of Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given today.
However, newspaper reports also suggest that the 39-year-old Republic of Ireland international may also be a target for Stoke City, complicating any possible move to The Riverside Stadium.
Given is to be released from the final year of his contract at Villa Park and will move back to the Riverside Stadium according to the Press Association.
Given spent three months on loan at the club during the 2013-14 season.
Boro boss Aitor Karanka was hugely impressed with the vastly experienced keeper during his time on Teesside, and is keen to hand him a role in another push for promotion to the Barclays Premier League.
Given, who has been working towards his coaching qualifications, would provide stiff competition for current keepers Dimi Konstantopoulos, Tomas Mejias and Connor Ripley, although it is unlikely that Karanka would retain all four men.
Given, who has also played in the north-east for Sunderland and Newcastle, made just 10 appearances for Villa last season, seven of them in the domestic cup competitions including the FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal in May.
But he has re-established himself as Ireland's number one in recent months and earned his 130th senior cap against Scotland last month after initially retiring from international football following the Euro 2012 finals.
Meanwhile, Boro remain hopeful of striking a deal to bring West Ham midfielder Stewart Downing back to his home-town club.
The 30-year-old, who is also in Sunderland's sights, is understood to be keen on the move, but no deal has yet been agreed with the Hammers.

Tottenham have announced the signing of Belgium international defender Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid - despite the potential of legal proceedings from Southampton.
Alderweireld, 26, moves to White Hart Lane having spent last season on loan with Ronald Koeman's Southampton, who had a deal in place to sign the former Ajax man.
Atletico could pay £1.5million to Saints to cancel that agreement, but the south coast club claim that the La Liga outfit did not do so in time and therefore claim they should have been the front-runners to sign Alderweireld
With 47 caps for Belgium, as well as three Eredivisie titles and a Primera Division winners' medal, Alderweireld brings a wealth of experience to White Hart Lane.
He will also link up with countryman and former Ajax team-mate Jan Vertonghen as well as fellow Belgium internationals Nacer Chadli and Mousa Dembele.

Celtic have completed the signing of Belgian keeper Logan Bailly, the club have announced.
The former OH Leuven stopper will be expected to push Parkhead number one Craig Gordon after he was handed a three-year deal by boss Ronny Deila.
The 29-year-old is the Hoops' third summer signing following the arrivals of Manchester City defender Dedryck Boyata and Saidy Janko from the Sky Blue's city rivals United.
And he is likely to be joined in the East End of Glasgow by Nadir Ciftci, with Celtic closing in on the Dundee United striker's capture after the Tannadice finally accepted their third bid yesterday.
Bailly, though, is delighted his deal is already signed and sealed.
He said: "It's a great feeling, it's big team with a big history and I'm very happy I'm here. When you see Celtic from the outside, you know it is a big team but when you are here you realise that it is a lot bigger.

Jonjo Shelvey has signed a new four-year contract at Swansea, the Barclays Premier League club have announced.
Shelvey, 23 and capped once by England, has made 77 appearances and scored nine goals since joining Swansea from Liverpool for £5million in the summer of 2013.
"The midfielder had two years left on his original deal but has penned fresh terms that will see him remain at the Liberty until the summer of June 2019," read a statement on the official Swansea website.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have announced that club captain Mikel Arteta has signed a new one-year deal with the club.
The Spaniard's extension fits in with Arsenal's policy of offering single-season contracts to their older players.
"He will stay with us for one more year because he has extended his contract," manager Arsene Wenger told Arsenal Player.
"He's one of the leaders in the club because he's the captain of the team. I expect him to contribute much more than last season but he also faces a battle.
"With the number of games we have ahead, we could use his experience, his desire and his quality as it will be vital for next season."
