Owen Heary's eight-month tenure as Sligo Rovers manager appears to be over after the club announced his departure this evening.
Sligo said in a statement that the Dubliner had "stepped down" but Heary contradicted that, telling RTÉ Sport that he had no intention of quitting.
Speaking on Setanta Sports, he later added: "I've never stepped down. They sacked me. there was ongoing discussions but I can say I never stepped down."
The announcement had been expected as long as a fortnight ago after a dismal first half to the season in which the Bit O'Red have won just two games, but was reportedly delayed due to negotiations over the former Bohemians manager's severance terms.
Heary only took over at Sligo last October after steering Bohemians to a seventh-place finish last season but has been unable to find success at a club more accustomed to competing for honours than fighting relegation.
A statement from Sligo said: "Sligo Rovers FC reluctantly wish to confirm that Owen Heary has stepped down as first-team Manager and departed the club.
"We would like to thank Owen for his services to the club and wish him all the best for what will without doubt be a successful managerial career.
"While Sligo Rovers FC appreciate there was much speculation in recent weeks, the club had been advised not to issue a statement or to place information concerning the issue in the public domain.
"Sligo Rovers FC would like to thank its members, supporters and sponsors for their patience and understanding throughout this process."
