Bohemians manager Keith Long declared himself “delighted” after his side’s fine 2-1 win over hitherto-unbeaten league leaders Dundalk.
An own goal from Gary Rogers and Dave Mulcahy’s winner helped Bohs to a win that blew open the title race in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.
“It was a great performance from us,” Long told RTÉ Sport after the match.
“We wanted to come here and we wanted to have a good go.
“Dundalk are reigning champions, they’re unbeaten, so to come into their back yard, to put in the performance that we did; there’s a quiet determination about this group of players, and we came up tonight, and I thought we put in a worthy performance, and obviously we’ve come away with the three points.
“We’re really pleased, delighted with the players, and their attitude and their application. We can’t ask any more.”
Although Long admitted Bohs had been somewhat fortunate in their opening goal, he hailed his side’s ability to cope with injuries and withstand Dundalk’s efforts to find a way back into the game.
Bohs went into the game without long-term absentees Derek Pender and Marc Griffin, and lost Stephen Best early in the game to a concussion.
“We got a goal with a little bit of luck involved in it – obviously, it’s come off the crossbar and hit the keeper and gone in, so from that point of view we’ll take it – you need it,” Long said.
“When you come to places like this you’ve got to ride your luck, you have to defend. We did that tonight.
“We got the second goal, we missed the penalty. But also we lost Stephen Best after 15 minutes. It’s been a tough week. We’ve lots of injuries in the squad at the moment, so to come here and get a result [...] it shows a team full of character.”
Long said Best had gone to hospital, but could not provide an exact timescale for how long he might be out injured.
“We’ll just see how he is and what the medical people say,” he added.
