UCC 0-5 Dundalk

EA Sports Cup holders Dundalk ended UCC’s fairytale run in the competition after recording a clinical 5-0 win at the quarter-finals stage at the Mardyke.

UCC showed plenty of endeavour, but the gulf in class between the two sides was apparent as early as the third minute when Ciaran O’Connor gave Dundalk the lead with a sublime lob after UCC had sloppily ceded possession.

Jake Kelly added a second for Dundalk just 10 minutes later, pivoting just inside the area and unleashing an unstoppable drive to the top-left corner of Jason O’Mahony’s goal.

Paddy Barrett ensured the Lilywhites had a three-goal buffer at the break with a curled effort from just outside the area in the 36th minute.

Barrett, buoyed by his first-half strike, made the score 4-0 in the 55th minute with a vicious shot from 30 yards out as an experimental line-up impressed on Leeside.

Kurtis Byrne opened his account for the season from distance in the 78th minute on a night when Dundalk’s prowess in front of goal was impeccable.

Dundalk were joined in the last four by Galway United, who edged out Bohemians 1-0 in extra-time, while Cork City, St Patrick’s Athletic, Derry City and Shamrock Rovers contest the remaining quarter-finals in the competition on Tuesday night.
