Defender Ciaran Clark faces a race against time to be fit for Ireland’s EURO 2016 qualifier against Scotland.

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood revealed that a medial ligament injury suffered against Tottenham two weeks ago will keep the 25-year-old out of the Premier League run-in and FA Cup final.

Ireland face Scotland on 13 June in a must-win Group D tie in Dublin with fellow defender Shane Duffy also ruled out through injury.

Sherwood said: “It’s a real blow for Ciaran but that’s the nature of the game – when you’re in there, there’s a chance of getting injured.

“He’s certainly one that doesn’t hold back and puts his body on the line. Unfortunately, he’s caught one there and we’ll see him next season.”
