Waterford United 0-2 Cork City
Two second-half goals were enough for Cork City to see off the challenge of Waterford United in the second round of the EA Sports Cup at the RSC.
Ross Gaynor’s penalty just after the restart put the Leesiders ahead after Mark O’Sullivan was fouled in the box.
Cork midfielder Gavan Holohan was sent off in the 65th minute after receiving a second booking but the ten men doubled their advantage when Robert Lehane got on the end of Kieran Djilali’s pass with 12 minutes to play.
Sligo Rovers 0-2 Derry City
Extra-time goals from Seamus Sharkey and Mark Timlin helped Derry City past 10-man Sligo Rovers after extra-time at The Showgrounds.
Daniel Ledwith was sent off in the 77th minute, just two minutes after coming on as a substitute, for a tackle on Seanan Clucas.
Sligo held on to force extra-time before Sharkey broke the deadlock in the 103rd minute. Timlin then made the game safe for Derry seven minutes from the end, as the Bit o' Red's miserable start to the season continued
Galway United 4-2 Cockhill Celtic
Cockhill Celtic briefly threatened an upset as they took an early lead against Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park but were eventually beaten 4-2.
James Bradley opened the scoring after just four minutes with a 40-yard effort that flew over Ger Hanley into the United net.
That lead lasted just 17 minutes as Andy O’Connell levelled matters before Ryan Connolly missed a penalty for the home side.
But second-half strikes from Padraic Cunningham (2) and Gary Shanahan ensured it was Tommy Dunne’s side that progressed, with Mark Moran scoring a late consolation goal for the Donegal team.
Cabinteely 0-2 Shamrock Rovers
Brandon Miele scored his second goal in two games as Shamrock Rovers beat Cabinteely 2-0 at Stradbrook.
Neither side could make the breakthrough in a dour first half.
But the Premier Division side took the lead in the 58th minute when Sean O’Connor headed Rob Cornwall’s cross past Evan Whelan.
Miele, who scored Rovers’ third in the 3-0 league win over Galway on Friday, doubled the lead just six minutes later to ensure the Hoops progress to the next round.
The quarter-finals pairings will be decided with an open draw. The remaining second round matches will be played on Tuesday night.
