Wexford Youths ended title winning season with a defeat

Wexford Youths women’s captain Kylie Murphy lifted the Continental Tyres Women’s National League on Saturday evening after Peamount United had slightly spoiled the party by inflicting a 1-0 defeat on the champions.

Willie Doyle’s side sealed the title at the home of 2014 champions Raheny United last week and rotated his panel for Saturday evening’s match at Ferrycarrig Park.

Peamount stopper Broke Dunne was not in party mood however and made a string of super saves to deny Claire O’Riordan in front of a large hometown crowd.

Laura Traynor grabbed the only goal of the game on 68 minutes to secure Peamount their fourth win on the road this season.

Dunne was awarded the Continental Tyres player of the game as Youths celebrated their first Women’s National League title.

Meanwhile, Cork City Women’s FC raced into a two goal lead, before succumbing to a 4-2 defeat to Castlebar Celtic in Celtic Park.

Katie McCarthy gave the Leesiders the lead on 28 minutes with her fourth strike of the season before Vanessa Ogbonna doubled the visitor’s advantage six minutes later.

Aisling Egan got Adrian Carberry’s side back into on the stroke of half time then Rachel Kearns levelled matters early in the second half with her fourth of the season.

Aoife Herbert’s third league goal of the season put the home side ahead before Shauanagh Jackson sealed all three points with her second of this year’s campaign landing Celtic third home win of the campaign.

Elsewhere, deposed champions Raheny United wrapped up their home campaign with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Galway WFC.

Katie McCabe opened the scoring against the run of play after quarter of an hour, her edge of the box strike deflecting off Keara Cormican and giving Galway keeper Tina Keller no chance.

Lisa Casserly equalised for the visitors five minutes before half-time with an expert free kick from the edge of the box which sailed into the corner of the Raheny net.

Raheny had the better of the second half chances before Katie McCabe grabbed her second of the day on 70 minutes but Ruth Fahy levelled the scores within 60 seconds with a 35 yard belter into the top corner of the home net.

McCabe was not finished and grabbed her 21st of the season five minutes before the end, taking all three points for Raheny and their first home league win since December.
