Wexford Youths Women were crowned FAI Continental Tyres Women's National League champions for the first time after recording a 2-1 victory over Raheny United at Morton Stadium on Saturday.
Goals from Amy Walsh and Claire O’Riordan confirmed Willie Doyle’s side as champions with two matches to spare in their campaign.
It was a cagey opening with Wexford knowing victory would seal the title, while defending champions Raheny United needed victory to stay in the race.
Wexford had the first chance of the game when Ciara Rossiter got behind the Raheny defence in the 17th 17 minute and found O’Riordan, but Niamh Walsh was on hand to block here effort with a diving lunge.
The hosts had the best of the first half-chances. Sarah Rowe's attacking run opened up a chance for Siobhan Killeen but Ciara Rossiter’s block saved Wexford.
Rebecca Creagh then saw her dipping volley swerve just wide.
Wexford took the game to the hosts after the restart as Amy Walsh’s cross came off the Raheny crossbar after Lauren Dwyer's attempted interception.
Carol Breen was next to try her luck from 30 yards and her shot skimmed just wide as Wexford piled forward with the aid of a strong breeze.
Siobhan Killeen’s lay-off set Republic of Ireland Under-16 international Jamie Finn in on goal and she calmly slotted home as Raheny took the lead.
The heavy rain which had lashed Morton Stadium abated just before half-time and four minutes later Wexford were on level terms.
Amy Walsh’s expert 30 yard free-kick flew into the Raheny net, much to the delight of the large contingent of visiting supporters.
Amy Walsh slipped in Claire O’Riordan two minutes later as she grabbed her 16th goal of a fabulous season to give Wexford the victory and the league title.
Meanwhile, Peamount United inflicted a 7-2 defeat on Cork City Women’s FC in Greenogue on Sunday.
Katie McCarthy opened the scoring for the visitors after 14 minutes, but Hayley Nolan levelled the scoring 11 minutes later with her third goal of the season.
The second half exploded into life as substitute Jessica Gargan put Pea’s ahead and minutes later Gargan set up Kim Turner to make it 3-1.
Vanessa Ogbonna responded almost immediately for City, grabbing her second goal of the season to make it 3-2.
Republic of Ireland Under-17 international Eleanor Ryan-Doyle made a dramatic impact by scoring twice on her introduction from the bench, while Rachel Doyle and Gargan netted either side of Ryan-Doyle’s brace as Peamount ran out emphatic winners.
